Diet; even the word is enough to make many people cringe. This is largely because diets don’t really work. Sure, you might lose weight for a while, but eventually you lose motivation, the weight creeps back and you give up in frustration. Instead, try a sustainable diet program to lose weight; one that isn’t a diet at all.
Forget the Word Diet
What is a diet? Originally the word diet means “the regular food or drink of a person or animal” according to the Free Online Dictionary. Today it means just about the opposite – the unusual foods and drinks people take on in order to lose weight, and it is completely unnatural. The result is that your body, which is generally more aware in this capacity than you, rebels.
Forget this new definition of diet and return to the old one. Think of your diet as the way you eat to achieve health, nutrition and pleasure. Don’t think you can enjoy food and lose weight? It can be done, and this is how.
Eat Right
No one is saying that you have to abandon every food you like forever, but you do need to return to proper eating and view treats as treats. The basis of what you eat, every day should be healthy, nutritious and appropriate. You don’t need to be told that a large salad with a nice piece of chicken, fish or steak is going to feed you well while fast food won’t, but we have fallen into a pattern where we accept poor food choices as normal.
The most common complaint is that it takes more work to eat right than to eat poorly, and that just isn’t true. In the time it takes you to drive through your neighborhood drive in, you could just as easily grab a handful of nuts and a piece of fruit. When it comes to regular meals, it does take a bit of planning, but think of how much you will save if you pass on eating out all the time.
Have Building Blocks to Healthy Nutrition at Home
Just like you need the right foundations to build a home, you need the correct building blocks to build your diet. The simplest way to figure out what you should eat is to think back to the days before modern supermarkets and food production made it essential for food to be refined, preserved and altered. Anything that wouldn’t have been eaten at that point doesn’t need to be in your diet.
Whole grains other than wheat are a great source of ready energy, fiber and many nutrients. Raw nuts provide protein and important fats. Organic produce, poultry and eggs are free of unnecessary chemicals and contain more nutrients than they conventionally farmed counterparts.
Any meat is fine as long as it is grass fed or wild caught and contains no preservatives. Skip the milk, unless it is raw milk, and stick to extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and organic butter for your fats. These are the basis of any diet program to lose weight and keep it off.
