There is little doubt that a large number of people have bought in to the myth that the only, or at least the best, way to get calcium is through milk. Celebrities advertise with their little milk mustaches, and there is no doubt that milk does have some nutritive value, but you have many other options, and most are healthier. The Diet Solution Program can show you how simple it is.
Why Eliminate Milk from Your Diet?
Aside from the fact that a large percentage of adults no longer have the enzymes necessary to properly digest milk proteins, milk, even “low fat” milk is actually very high in fat. There is a strong link between milk consumption and cataracts and indications are that drinking milk or eating dairy products has no effect upon osteoporosis. Research now indicates that decreasing protein intake is more helpful since excessive consumption of animal protein leaches calcium from bones.
If Not Milk, Then What?
Now that is the real question, isn’t it? Once you understand that milk and dairy products in general aren’t a good source of protein or calcium, where should you turn? There are several excellent sources of calcium that you can incorporate seamlessly.
Fish which is canned with bones or has small pin bones when cooked offers plenty of calcium. Think of sardines, tuna and halibut fillets. Wild caught salmon has plenty of those little bones which essentially melt away while cooking, but you get the benefits of the calcium none the less.
Any fruit or vegetable will have some calcium, but there are those which are simply loaded. Sesame seeds have more calcium than any other food, but they are not something you can eat by the cupful. You can, however, spread some sesame paste on your sprouted grain bread, toss some in your cooking or look for Middle Eastern recipes which frequently include it.
Vegetable sources of merit include spinach and collard greens. Swiss chard, kale, broccoli and celery also have plenty of calcium for you to enjoy. Papaya and oranges contain it too, and if you eat a food rich in vitamin C along with your calcium you absorb it better.
If You Can’t Stand to Eliminate Dairy from Your Diet
For some people, a burrito isn’t worth the trouble without at least some cheese, or yogurt is a favorite topping or the basis of a fruit parfait. If you are going to have milk products, search for those made from raw milk. Finding cheese made from raw milk isn’t hard; the rest involves some work.
Part of the problem is that it isn’t exactly legal to sell raw milk for consumption in some states; you will have to check with local regulations. The advantage of obtaining raw milk is that it has the digestive enzymes which help you break down those challenging proteins. Even so, you wouldn’t want to make dairy a large part of your diet for a variety of reasons you can find at the Diet Solution Program website.
